This policy outlines the rights and responsibilities of students and expected student conduct as a member of the CPTC community. Those rights and responsibilities are detailed fully in the Student Code of Conduct and codified in law through WAC 495C-121-020, 030, 040, 050, 060, 070, 080, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170, 180, 190, 200, 210, 220, and 230. These regulations have been adopted to provide an atmosphere conducive to teaching, learning, and developing the skills needed for employment. The Student Code of Conduct can be found on the CPTC website:

The Board of Trustees, acting pursuant to RCW 28B.10.52 and 28B.50.140 (14) delegates to the President the authority to administer student disciplinary actions and appeals. Through enactment of this chapter, the President sub-delegates and/or further assigns responsibilities related to student discipline to the Vice-President for Student Success and the Dean for Student Success.

The following enumerated rights are guaranteed to each student within the limitations of statutory law, rules, and college policies (WAC 495C-121-040):

  • Academic Freedom- Right of free inquiry, expression, and assembly. Students have the right to pursue educational objectives, be protected from evaluation which is arbitrary/capricious/prejudiced, and the right to a learning environment free from discrimination, disrespectful conduct, and all forms of harassment.
  • Due Process- Students have the right to be secure in their persons, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures. No sanction can be imposed on any student without notice to the accused of the nature of the charges. A student accused of misconduct is entitled to due process as outlined in the Code of Conduct.

It is the responsibility of students to know student conduct that is prohibited as detailed in the Code of Conduct (WAC 495C-121-050). The college can initiate disciplinary action against a student who commits, aids, abets, incites, encourages, or assists another person in committing acts of misconduct.

Disciplinary sanctions and conditions, due process for disciplinary procedures, and appeals are detailed in the Code of Conduct and are administered by the Student Conduct Officer and Conduct Review Officer.
