Web Design
Web Examples
Students begin their studies by learning to build a web page in notepad using just 10 lines of code. They proceed through the process of building websites utilizing Photoshop and Imageready for their imaging, and then construct the final website from scratch in notepad. By the end of the second quarter, students will have built a 12 page, liquid, interface based XHTML website using Dreamweaver for speed, and notepad for the occasional correction. This website takes full advantage of Dreamweaver's ability to create JavaScript rollovers, fly-out menus, CSS style sheets and a simple PHP contact form. Students also study Flash, advanced Photoshop, Illustrator, digital video, Adobe After Effects and Digital Photography.
Students who choose to specialize in Web Design learn to build web sites using the all CSS, liquid interface design technique and all sites will be fully optimized for search engines. Web students also add an important dimension to their skill set when they learn PHP and MySQL. Combining these programming features is an integral part of creating an ecommerce shopping cart site. Several advanced classes are also taught in JavaScript and Flash actionscript exploring object oriented programming (OOP).
The capstone project for graduating web design students requires students to create a large portfolio based website showing all the skills they have acquired during the course of their studies including: a PHP shopping cart connected to a MySQL database, all CSS interface design, flash animation/actionscript, Illustrator examples demonstrating expert level pen work and digital photography. Many students also have pages devoted to traditional artwork, and/or examples of digital video editing.
The capstone project is designed to provide students with an online presence. Through this large project, students demonstrate all of their skills to potential employers, whether brick and mortar web design shops or freelance customers. Many of our students choose to become freelance web designers after graduation; however our graduates have found jobs with the following companies:
- SiteCrafting - Tacoma
- Artifex - Tacoma
- State of Washington, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction - Olympia
- Richcolor - Seattle
- Department of Homeland Security - Olympia
- Madigan Hospital - Fort Lewis
- Clover Park Technical College
