From the President...

In the past two weeks, we have had opportunities to celebrate the accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students in very meaningful ways. June 15, we focused on our students as they graduated in the new Tacoma Convention and Trade Center. As State Sen. Rosa Franklin (D-29) reminded us, the new graduates overcame any naysayers or doubters in their lives by exemplifying the phrase “Veni, vidi, veci”--“I came, I saw, I conquered--vim, vigor, victory”! I admire Sen. Franklin for encouraging the graduates to live their lives with the intent of “leaving the world a better place than when you found it.” On June 22, we turned out attention to the contributions of CPTC employees during the Staff Appreciation Ceremony. I commend the committee members who organized the event for recognizing not only the winners, but also the nominees. It was a special honor to present the President’s Award to Gerry Truman who has made such an important contribution to the college and educational community during her 35 years in education--22 in the K-12 system and 13 years at the college. Jerry Glasgow, as for your unpredictable antics...I can only say, What next!

'Incubator' Businesses Hire Accounting Students

Three Accounting students have been hired by businesses they worked with while participating in practicums at the Willliam M. Factory Small Business Incubator in Tacoma. The incubator provides office space, technical support and counseling services for up to 70 start-up businesses at one time. This quarter, two CPTC students are providing accounting services for the businesses 1-4 p.m. weekday afternoons. Lloyd White, Accounting instructor, said the incubator practicum "gives students the opportunity to gain real-life experiences that are extremely valuable when they are seeking employment." The late Gary Waller, a former instructor and administrator at CPTC, was the first director of the incubator.
