Technical Requirements

Technical requirements and skills needed for eLearning

Required Skills

To be successful in an Internet based eLearning course you will need to know how to:

1. Use the Internet

2. Use a search engine

3. Send and receive e-mail

4. Send an e-mail with an attachment

5. Use a word processor (You must know how to save your work in Microsoft Word doc format.)

6. Copy and Paste from one document to another

7. Use a bulletin board

8. Use a chat room

9. Skills seven and eight are not required in all courses

Sometimes students feel they can learn these skills while taking an Internet based course. In this case they are trying to learn at least two courses -- the one they are enrolled in and one on how to use the Internet -- and only one of them is taught by the instructor. If you do not have these skills you should consider not enrolling in an Internet based course.

Settings

1 - Make sure you have turned off all pop-up blockers. You can find them in stand alone programs, in antivirus software, in toolbars such as Google's, and in firewall software. They must be disabled or some features such as online testing will not work.

2 - Make sure your browser is set to accept cookies. ANGEL sets a session cookie and will not allow you to log in if you block cookies.

3 - You'll need the latest version of Java and you can find it here:Click here.

NOTE:   If you're using a Macintosh, you must use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox as your browser. ANGEL does not support Safari. You can download Firefox here:Click here.

If you use AOL to access the internet:

You will have problems if AOL is your ISP. If you do use them to access the Internet, do not use their browser to open ANGEL. Students also have had problems sending and receiving email through AOL.

Install the downloaded browser software on your computer. (Installation instructions are provided at Mozilla's Firefox and Microsoft's download sites.)

Follow these procedures to access ANGEL:

1 - Download a recommended version of either Mozilla's Firefox or Internet Explorer .

2 - After you've installed your new browser successfully, restart your computer.

3 - Sign on to AOL as you normally do, but stay at the AOL Main (Welcome) page.

4 - Keep AOL running in the background and start your new stand-alone browser (either Mozilla's Firefox or Internet Explorer). The stand-alone browser will use your AOL Internet connection.

Note: If you have problems getting your browser to work with AOL, check out the Member Services area of AOL. Click on "Internet and World Wide Web." Double-click "Using other browsers with AOL." for further information.
