“Service-Learning is a teaching method which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. In other words, service learning is a chance for you to get hands on experience and apply your course objectives in a real world setting. Service-learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to the community.”
The goal is to blend service and learning so that the service reinforces, improves and strengthens the learning, and the learning reinforces, improves and strengthens the service. The pedagogy of service-learning, at its best, produces a greater impact than either could have produced separately.
