Transfer of Credit to CPTC Colleges and Universities

Transfer credit from an accredited institution may be accepted if the course work:

• Was college level.
• Was graded as “C” (2.0) or better.
• Meets required time limitations:
  
  1. Technical Courses: Must meet the programs requirements as described in the Clover Park Technical College catalog.
  2. General Education Courses do not have a required time limitation unless specified by an individual program.
  3. Requirements can be found in the program description section of this web site.
• Credit in transfer combined with all sources may constitute no more than 50 percent of the credits needed for program completion.

Transfer of credit for programs with license requirements are subject to current licensing laws.
 

High School Learning Experience / Dual Credit

Credit/dual credit may be accepted for high school learning experience where formal articulation agreements are in place. Please contact Student Records for specific agreements.
 

Military Experience

Credit may be accepted for military experience or education based on guidelines from the American Council on Education.
 

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Credit

Students who wish to receive credit for prior learning will complete the Prior Learning Assessment Request Form available from the Student Records Office and pay the following fees for assessment services: $40 evaluation fee and $20 for each course for which prior learning credit is requested.

Instructors will evaluate the prior experiential learning of a student in relation to the competencies of the program and will award credit for demonstrated learning outcomes that are appropriate to the subject, course or program offered.

All credits awarded for this type of experience will be noted as such on the student’s transcript with a grade of “X”. Credit for prior experiential learning may constitute no more than 25 percent of the credits needed for program completion.
 

Service Member Opportunity College (SOC)

Clover Park Technical College has been designated as a member of Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC), a group of more than 1500 colleges and universities that provide educational opportunities for servicemembers and their families throughout the world.

Recognizing the problems faced by military students whose jobs require frequent moves, SOC member schools make it easier to obtain college degrees rather than just accumulate course credit by:

• Limiting the amount of course work students must take at a single college to no more than 25% of degree requirements
• Designing transfer practices to minimize loss of credit and avoid duplication of course work
• Awarding credit for military experience
• Awarding credit for tests such as CLEP

CLEP & DSST Credit

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a way to earn credit for comprehensive knowledge you may have acquired through independent or prior study, cultural pursuits, work or other life experiences. If you successfully pass the CLEP tests you may receive credit for completing certain certificate or degree requirements. Clover Park Technical College (CPTC) accepts the subject tests listed on the Course Equivalency Guide when passed with the recommend American Council on Education (ACE) score. Information about CLEP tests and testing sites can be obtained on the College Board website at www.collegeboard.com.

DSST (formerly known as DANTES Subject Standardized Tests) is also accepted as a way to earn credit for prior knowledge or experience. The subject must be equivalent to CPTC courses and will be accepted according to the ACE recommendations for passing and credit value. Information about DSST tests and testing sites can be obtained online at www.dantes.doded.mil.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Clover Park Technical College grants credits to students who have earned a score of three or more on the Advanced Placement Tests of the College Board in the subject areas: listed on the Course Equivalency Guide. For more information about AP study and testing, please see the AP counselor at your high school or go to www.collegeboard.com and search for Advanced Placement. When you take your test, be sure to indicate that the results should be sent to CPTC.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

International Baccalaureate students who have earned successful IB higher level test scores may request college credit for IB higher level work that is the equivalent of CPTC degree and certificate course requirements, as shown on the Course Equivalency Guide. Alternative Credit Options

CPTC accepts many alternative credit options for completion of degrees and certificates, however, if your plans include transfer to another college or university, they may not provide the same credit and you should check with their admissions office to determine your best options for meeting your educational goals.

Transfer of CPTC Credit

Clover Park Technical College prepares students for careers that do not require baccalaureate degrees.  Many Clover Park Technical College programs have individual articulation agreements with other academic institutions that provide for the transfer of credits.  Acceptance of credit taken at one educational institution is always at the discretion of the receiving institution.  Students are advised to contact the registrar of the receiving institution to discuss its policies and procedures for transfer credit.  

List of One Year Transfer Courses -“Washington 45”

In response to legislative action in 2010, the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges identified a list of courses, the “Washington 45,” that will transfer from community and technical colleges to other two year and four year institutions as general education credits. Please note that the “Washington 45” does not replace the Direct Transfer Agreement, Associate of Science Tracks I and II or any Major Related Program agreement, nor will it guarantee admission to a four-year institution. The courses offered at CPTC that satisfy one year or 45 credits of general education requirements at all public community and technical colleges, four-year colleges, and universities are listed in the table below.

CPTC Degrees

Clover Park Technical College awards two types of degrees. 

• The Associate of Applied Technology (AAT) degree is awarded to students who satisfactorily complete the competencies and requirements in programs approved by the college’s Curriculum Committee and by the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.  AAT degree options are available in programs 90 credits or more in length containing a core of fifteen (15) college-level academic credits.  College-level academic courses in communication, computation, and human relations required for AAT degrees are designed to prepare students for work.  While they meet program graduation requirements, they are not likely to transfer to other colleges or universities.
   
• The Associate in Applied Science—Transfer (AAS-T) degree is awarded to students who satisfactorily complete the competencies and requirements in programs approved by the college’s Curriculum Committee and by the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.  AAS-T degrees are workforce degrees with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in transfer.  The general education component of the AAS-T degree is comprised of not less than twenty (20) credits of courses including a minimum of 5 credits in English Composition; 5 credits in quantitative reasoning; and 10 credits in social science, humanities or science.  It is assumed that many AAS-T degrees will have significantly more than the minimum 20 credits of general education courses.

CPTC Degrees Transfer To…

In general, Clover Park Technical College’s Associate of Applied Technology (AAT) degrees are not designed for transfer to other colleges or universities.  CPTC degrees will not be accepted as appropriate preparation for most BA or BS degrees.  However, Clover Park Technical College has negotiated transfer agreements into specific baccalaureate programs.
 

Associate of Applied Technology (AAT)

Capella University
With more than 500 courses and 80 degrees and specializations, Capella University is the leader in online degree programs.  Clover Park Technical College students, who successfully complete their associate’s degree requirements and otherwise meet Capella’s admissions requirements, will be accepted into Capella’s upper division Bachelor’s program.  Capella will accept the associate degree credits as a block.

General Education Core Areas—Distribution Requirements:

• Communication – 6 quarter credits
• Social Science – 6 quarter credits
• Humanities – 6 quarter credits
• Natural Sciences/Mathematics – 6 quarter credits
• Additional quarter credits from any of the core areas above – 21 credits
• Total General Education credits required – 45 credits

AA/AS Degree; minimum credits required for full admission to Capella – 90 credits

Capella University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
 

City University
Clover Park Technical College (CPTC) students may transfer up to 90 credits from approved programs to City University (CU) for inclusion in the degree requirements of appropriate Bachelor’s degrees.

To be considered for admission to CU, students must submit a CU admission application form, including any additional admission documents if required, and submit an official transcript from CPTC. 

City University, founded in 1973, addresses the educational needs of working adults and offers certificates and degrees in more than 50 programs.  It has nearly two dozen locations throughout the state of Washington as well as the state of California, the Canadian province of British Columbia, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia, and Switzerland.  City University is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
 

The Evergreen State College
The Evergreen State College (TESC) accepts four Clover Park Technical College Associate of Applied Technology (AAT) degrees for Evergreen’s Upside Down Degree Program:

• Legal Support Professional
• Mechanical Engineering Design
• Massage Studies
• Medical Laboratory Technician

In order to qualify for transfer, CPTC students must:

• Earn an Associate of Applied Technology degree;
• Complete at least English 101,with a grade of C or better; and, if possible English 102 with a grade of C or better
• Achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.5; and
• Meet the admissions criteria for Evergreen in effect at the time of their application.

Evergreen will grant CPTC students meeting the above conditions:

• Automatic acceptance into the Upside Down Degree program;
• Necessary academic advising to meet the program requirements; and
• Ninety (90) quarter credits for the Associate of Applied Technology on completion of the Upside Down Program requirements.

The Evergreen State College is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
 

Associate in Applied Science-Transfer Degrees (AAS-T)

The AAS-T is built upon the technical courses required for job preparation but also includes a college-level general education component, common in structure for all such degrees.  Awarding the AAS-T is at the option of the college.  Not all technical degrees are appropriate for the AAS-T designation. Clover Park Technical College has identified AAS-T degree options for the following programs:

Currently, the University of Phoenix, City University and DeVry University accept CPTC’s Associate in Applied Science-Transfer (AAS-T) degrees.
 

University of Phoenix
The University of Phoenix has agreed to accept the AAS-T in transfer for their Bachelors of Science in Management (BSM) degree.  To find out more about the University of Phoenix, contact them through their website at http://www.phoenix.edu/.

City University
City University accepts all credits in the AAS-T, though more than two years may be required to complete the City University degree.  To find out more about City University, contact them at http://www.cityu.edu.

DeVry University
Students completing an AAS-T degree at CPTC will receive a “block transfer” of courses to DeVry’s Bachelor of Science degree in Technical Management (BSTM).  The following programs are eligible:
